Causes Of Fibroid In Women

Common Causes Of Fibroids And Solutions

A fibroid in the uterus starts life off as a single cell and it is not known precisely what causes a cell to grow into a fibroid tumor. The good news is that fibroids are nearly always harmless, but if you suspect you have fibroids, it makes sense to have them checked out by your doctor before embarking on any treatment.

So although we might not be able to determine the causes of fibroids precisely, what we do know is that it is likely that fibroids grow as a result of the subtle interaction of various factors which happen to coincide in certain women to spark fibroid growth. Now although these causes won’t be the same in each woman who has fibroids, there are certain common threads which seem to recur.

Estrogen

Estrogen is thought to play a large part in the formation and growth of fibroids. Not every women with high estrogen levels will have fibroids, but most women who have developed fibroids will have elevated estrogen levels.

Your Age

Fibroids are very common in women between 30 and 40, and it is known that they shrink around the time of the menopause when estrogen levels drop

Genetic Factors

Although not proven, there is thought to be a hereditary link-i.e if you have a maternal relative with fibroids, you are slightly more at risk

Origin

Afro-Caribbean women are three times more likely to have fibroids

Childbearing Status

Women with no children or those who had their last child at a young age are at a higher risk

Weight

Overweight women are more likely to have fibroids and this is thought to relate to the fact that estrogen levels are higher in fat cells than others.

Although women can often look at the above factors and see their own personal trigger factors, for many there are no obvious reasons for fibroid growth and the common causes of fibroids do not seem to apply in their cases.

The lack of clearly identifiable causes can make conventional treatment very difficult as unless the underlying cause of fibroids is removed, fibroids are likely to regrow even following surgery. However, many women have found that natural treatments can work very successfully.

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. QUESTION:
Why are Fibroids so common in women yet doctors do not know what cause them?
Fibroids supposidely affect 30% of women (don’t quote me on that stat but I know the number is very high) (as many as 50 percent of African American women over the age of 35 have fibroids source: http://www.womenshealthmatters.ca/centres/pelvic_health/fibroids/ ) and doctors know what they are, they know the symptoms, they have some treatment options but doctors DO NOT understand WHY FIBROIDS OCCUR! This is very alarming and frustrating. I think more research should be dedicated to fibroids and their cause. If it was a male problem I suspect so many years would not go by without more research into understanding this fibroid issue which can cause anguish for many woman. Not sure if other countries have a better understanding of fibroids but living in the USA we should have more insight into this very common female problem. Please post any good links or resources found on people doing fibroid research around the world or any helpful links on treatment options especially robotic assisted surgery (da vinci process) for fibroids. Thank you in advance. Happy Women’s History Month! Please share some good information.

Why is it radical feminists like to portray women as almighty and untouchable in fighting movies nowadays? You like to show this ‘girl power’ theme and how a heroine can save the entire planet and fight off tens of MEN in combat battles but this isn’t what we see in real life? Check this out.

Next, you remember the movie Teeth back in 2008 don’t you? That was an ultra misandristic movie and it makes women look like horrible creatures. So in the movie women can just ‘bite’ off another man’s penis or she can castrate him anytime right? Well, in real life it isn’t ‘quite’ similar. Check this out.

These 750000 castrated women are in the United States alone, and this is done every year. And keep in mind, most of these operations are done by MALE gynaecologist. So now I ask you, who’s castrating who in real life? Oh, and you laugh at men losing their penis. How about this for a laugh?

Radical feminists, please explain yourself and enlighten me. Guys, have a good laugh at them also. Thanks.

    • ANSWER:
      Someone has issues…

No gender is better than the other. Period.

Being castrated doesn’t have anything to do with a superior gender. Both men and women can be castrated. It is always by choice here in America. Forced castration is illegal.

Being raped has nothing to do with a superior gender. Both men and women can be raped. Rape is immoral and illegal.

I do not find rape funny. I do not find sexual mutilation to either gender funny. The fact you do, and think somehow this proves one gender is superior to the other is sickening.

  4. QUESTION:
Can a pelvic sonogram make a virgen loose her virginity? Can a uterine fibroid cause pain during intercourse?
My friend a 25-year-old women had a CAT scan of the abdomen and pelvis due to pelvic pain. The findings revealed that there is something (central hypodensity, possibly a uterine fibroid) in the uterine cervix and a pelvic sonogram was recommended. My friend is getting married in September of this year and she is a virgin. She wants to keep her virginity until she gets married. She is concerned if a pelvic sonogram will interfere with loosing her virginity before getting married. There is a possibility that she may have a fibroid (since her mother had one at the same age). Therefore, her main concerns are as follows: (1) Will a pelvic ultrasound make her loose her virginity? & (2) Can a fibroid interfere with pain during intercourse? Please advise.

    • ANSWER:
SEX is the only thing that can make her loose her virginity. The better question would be, “can a pelvic sonogram tear a virgin’s hymen?” The answer is probably not. If it is an external or abdominal sonogram then the answer is definitely not. If it is a trans-vaginal sonogram then a small transducer is placed in the vagina. If she has stretched the hole in her hymen enough to allow the use of tampons then the transducer will not tear the hymen. Anyway under no circumstance will it cause her to loose her virginity. Only a penis can do that.

  5. QUESTION:
ABSENT PERIODS. What causes absent periods? Can a small fibroid be treated orally without going into surgery?
I am a woman of 36 years with a 12 year old child from a previous relationship. I have been married for 4 years and my periods were normal until last year february when I had periods 2 times in a space of 1 week.

From March, 2007 I havent had periods. I saw a gynae doc who prescribed a contraceptive pill for 3 months. But no period. In August 2007 I was then put on progesterone for 14 days, but still no periods.

2 weeks ago I did a scan which showed I had intramural fibroid which is 2.17cm x 2.64cm. Can this be the reason why I am not having periods? How do I get my periods back on track as I want to conceive with my current husband. I am not on any drugs, I dont smoke, I am not HIV positive. I am a secretary by profession and work 8 hours during the week days. I am 1.59cm tall and I weigh 51kgs. I used to weigh 55kg, but due to stress my weight is now 51kgs.

Is it normal to live without periods at my age? Please advise for I need your help urgenlty. Thank you.

    • ANSWER:
What on earth did the doctor who diagnosed the fibroid suggest to you about this?

Your current menstrual cycle problems are the direct result of the fibroid, which is quite large (as fibroids go).

For heaven’s sake, the fibroid is not going to disappear on its own. If you want your menstrual cycle to return to normal so you can have another baby, then you need to get the fibroid removed ASAP. It shouldn’t be a big procedure – these days they use “key-hole” surgery …. go in in the morning and be out by just after lunch.

Do be aware though, that even after the fibroid is removed, it may take several months for your periods to return to normal.

      Good luck.
