Fibroid Biopsy

Fibroid Biopsy

Fibroids are benign tumors that are developed in the uterus. They widely range in size from very small to very large. At times, they become so large that they fill the entire uterus. On the other hand, sometimes they are so tiny that they don’t noticed by the patient herself. Similar to their size, they also vary in number. They can be solitary or in the form of groups. They are very common in relatively older women. As these are benign tumors, they are non-cancerous. However, sometimes they can make complications and become an actual vehicle of discomfort.

The exact causes of fibroids are still under darkness. They are believed to have some strong links with estrogens level. Estrogen really increases the growth of fibroids and that is why fibroids are most common in women of the age group of 20-35. When a woman reaches menopause, estrogen level decreases sharply and so as the likelihood of having fibroids. Out of every five women over the age of 30, one woman necessarily grows fibroids. Fibroids are also less common in Caucasian women as compared to non- Caucasian. Black women have nearly 50% more probability of having fibroids as compared to white ones.

There are also no specific symptoms of fibroids. However the women who have fibroids experience heavy bleeding, prolonged periods, difficulty in urination, pelvic pain etc. Women who have increased weight or obesity are most susceptible to fibroids. Also, the women who have experienced their first menstrual cycle before the age of 10 are very much on the risk of having fibroids.

Fibroids can be present in the cavity of uterus as well they can be in the lining of uterus. Most commonly, fibroids are located in the wall of uterus. These fibroids are called as intramural fibroids. Cervical fibroids are found in the cervix and sub-mucosal fibroids are present beneath the muscle.

As mentioned above fibroids are benign tumors, so there are no chances of cancer. Out of every 1000 fibroids, just one fibroid develops in to cancer. These are the statistics of US Department of Health. From these statistics, you can have the estimate of the chances of emergence of cancer from fibroids.

Detection of fibroids:

The detection of fibroids is not a big issue. You should consult your doctor for fibroids finding. Your doctor would physically examine the pelvic region. If he feels something, he will recommend you for an ultrasound. Ultrasound confirms the presence or absence of fibroids. Sometimes your doctor may suggest fibroids biopsy. Biopsy is the extraction of cells of from a particular area of body for examination. Endometrial biopsy is a process in which tissue samples are taken from the endometrium (inner lining of uterus) and are examined under microscope. Fibroid tumor biopsy tells the probability of the conversion of fibroids in to cancers. Unusual results of biopsy definitely pinpoint towards cancer.

Fibroids biopsy when pregnant:

During pregnancy, fibroids biopsy can become inevitable. This is for the reason that it will tell you about the condition of fibroids in the uterus. In case, if it indicates any cancerous activity, hysterectomy becomes necessary.
