Fertility And Fibroids

What Are the Side Effects of the Fertility Drug Clomid?

Women with PCOS (polycystic ovarian syndrome) or other disorders that may affect ovulation may turn to fertility drugs to help stimulate ovulation. Women who are going through fertility treatment may look to stimulate ovulation with fertility drugs as well. When taking fertility medications it is important that patients follow the instructions given to them by their doctor to avoid side effects or complications as much as possible. However, side effects may exist in many cases, and patients should be aware of them before taking any medications such as Clomid.

Clomid may be taken to cause the pituitary gland to release greater amounts of FSH and LH, thus stimulating ovulation. The side effects of this fertility medication are mild in most cases, but patients should be aware of them so they may recognize them when they occur. As with many fertility treatments, there is a risk of multiple pregnancies, meaning twins, triplets, etc. This is actually the most well-known of all side effects of this and many other fertility medications. It’s for this reason that many fertility procedures involving transferring embryos to the uterus or other parts of the reproductive system only transfer a minimal amount, and it’s why many choose a low dose of fertility medicine.

Some women may experience bloating or discomfort in the abdominal area when taking Clomid. Discomfort is usually mild, but those who experience more severe pain or cramps should inform their doctor. Some women may also experience hot flashes. Hot flashes are characterized by a sudden feeling of warmth. Some may even break out in a sweat or feel flush. Heartbeat increases in some cases when having a hot flash. Night sweats are hot flashes that occur when asleep. Some women may feel cool following a hot flash, especially if they sweat during it.

Clomid may also lead to mood swings in which the woman will feel emotional, sensitive or depressed while taking the fertility medication. Going through infertility troubles may lead to these feelings on its own, so be sure to discuss mood swings with your fertility specialist so that you know what you may expect. Some also experience nausea, dizziness, headaches and weight gain when taking Clomid. These are less common than some of the other side effects, but can be quite uncomfortable. Some women may also experience spotting and abnormal menstrual bleeding while taking this fertility medication, which may be quite frustrating as well.

    • ANSWER:
My doctor told me the same thing. I had an intramural fibroid the size of a grapefruit in the back wall of my uterus. My doctor told me that an abdominal myomectomy was the only way to go. I was really scared, but everything turned out great. The doctor took out two additional fibroids that were not detectable on ultrasound. I was in the hospital a total of three days. From what I hear, it was very much like a C-section (my mother in law works in labor and delivery). One year later, everything is clear and I am trying to get pregnant. The doctor sees no reason why I shouldn’t be able to. The only thing is that any birth will have to be via C-section, because my uterine muscles may not be strong enough to endure labor.

I’m 36 and I’ve been trying for several years to get pregnant. I can’t afford fertility treatments and don’t have insurance. I do get bad PMS. And are the procedures costly and painful? THANKS!

Fibroids are fibrous tissue that form in the muscle of the uterus. They’re more common than you think. It can make you infertile, and there are specialty fertility treatments just for fibroids. They diagnose fibroids by an ultrasound or a CT scan.
