Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome is a common condition in women that wreaks havoc on hormones and causes physical and psychological damage. Polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) is a complex hormonal disturbance that effects the entire body and has numerous implications for general health. Women with this syndrome have, over the course of their life, an increased risk of coronary disease, diabetes and endometrial cancer. PCOS was first diagnosed in 1935 as Stein-Leventhal syndrome. Between 5 and 30 percent of women have some characteristic of PCOS. The disorder is probably the most common hormonal abnormality in women of reproductive age and certainly is a leading cause of infertility.

The treatment of PCOS ultimately depends on symptoms and whether the patient desires pregnancy. Insofar as menstrual irregularities and hormonal imbalance causing lack of ovulation is concerned, the birth control pill is the most effective method of providing regular, predictable cycles for those women not interested in childbearing. The birth control pill represents a safe and effective treatment for long-term hormonal imbalance in PCOS because the active ingredients in the pill reduce the ovarian production of male hormone and at the same time minimizes any risks of uterine cancer.

  5. QUESTION:
Do i need to get a varicocele surgery?
I am a 15 year old male with a varicocele in my left testicle. I don’t have any pain, and it doesn’t seem to be causing any problems. My family also struggles financially and would have to pay for the entire surgery out of pocket, as we have no insurance. Do i really need the surgery? Would getting an Embolization be cheaper?

    • ANSWER:
To determine if you need surgery, you will need to see a doctor- preferably a urologist. Then you would have the information you needed to make a decision. For the most part, varicoceles do not require any treatment at all, unless they cause problems. Yours doesn’t. It’s just a varicose vein in a spot you would probably prefer not to have one. But you can live a long productive life, and still become a father with one. I’ve seen some pretty impressive size varicoceles in my career, the biggest one belonged to a father of six. We repaired his hernia- but not the varicocele, because he saw no reason to. As far as the procedure that works best, that’s the call of the doctor doing the correction, not a call you make. Emoblization does not always work, either. And even if it does, just like with surgery, the varicocele can happen again. So for now, I suggest you just wait. It’s not broken, and doesn’t necessarily need fixing either.
