Hysterectomy – Losing the Womb

Are you facing having to undergo surgery for a hysterectomy, if so the more understanding on the whole scenario you have, will help you come to terms with loss of the womb and cope with the emotional and physical implications? Women vary in the way they cope with such a major change in their life so therefore it is important that the treatment they receive before and after the operation is of intimate understanding to the way the woman feels at the time.

One in five women will have had their womb (uterus) removed. Women wanting to know more about a hysterectomy then simply explained it evolves round the female reproductive organs a system which includes the uterus, vagina, ovaries and fallopian tubes. Familiarly described the uterus is a pear-shaped, muscular organ about the size of a tennis ball, positioned in the middle of the pelvis. Pregnancy develops in the uterus. Every organ in the human body will have a role to play for it to function in the way nature intended, the uterus lining (the endometrium) often sheds to produce periods.

The uterus is divided in to two parts-the corpus which is the chief organ and the cervix at the bottom where it meets the vagina. The fallopian tubes are joined to the two upper corners of your uterus. The ovaries are located near to the end of the tubes. The female reproductive organs are held insecurely by numerous ligaments, Before making a rash decision to finalize paperwork for having a hysterectomy all other alternatives should be considered, however if you have no success from exploration of other treatments, then the operation maybe inevitable.

One reason for recommendation of a hysterectomy is if you suffer from heavy bleeding; however there are other medical issues why hysterectomies take place. Loss of menstrual flow blood clots and pain will determine necessary treatments. Some women with heavy bleeding have no detectable pelvic disease, and their heavy bleeding is normally caused through hormonal imbalance, fibroids, or thyroid disease. Heavy bleeding at the time of your periods will not necessarily result in having surgery because there may well be another reason for why this is happening, so until a condition is determined by your doctor do not give cause to yourself to worry over something that may well be successfully treated with other treatments or medication.

Monthly periods are controlled by a complex system of hormones, the type and amount changing throughout the cycle. Oft times these levels of hormones get disrupted causing irregular and/or heavy bleeding, study states that stress can affect hormone levels where periods become non existent or get heavier. Hormone irregularities happens more as we get older e.g. the menopause, you need a IQ in medicine to understand what is happening to you’re your periods, “now you see me now you don’t”

Hysterectomy means removal of the uterus by operation and often involves removing the cervix, fallopian tubes and ovaries; however removal will only take place depending on severity of the condition. .
The uterus can be removed through a cut in the abdomen (abdominal hysterectomy) or through the vagina (vaginal hysterectomy). Questions need to be asked relating to any doubts you may have to clarify uncertainties. Operations entail risks so make sure you’re satisfied with process procedures explained by your doctor or gynaecologist before surgery happens. The healthier in mind body and soul is a sure way of helping you through a speedy recovery, also eating healthy edibles can help fight infection.

Hysterectomy surgery and pelvic floor repair are usually carried out under a general anaesthetic, although not often, but known to be done with an epidural injection.
If you haven’t kicked the habit of smoking then it is in your best interest to do so before going down to theatre, stop smoking at least six weeks before surgery, this will help recovery from the anaesthetic and reduce risk of chest infection and lung cancer if you are a heavy puffer.

A catheter is normally in place on your personal at the time of you coming round from sedation (anaesthetic) The purpose of the catheter is to help drain urine flow. Discomfort and pain can be expected so you may be hooked up to a drip, the drip provides fluid (medication and antibiotics) to kill pain.

No major exertion should be exercised; however it is best to get out of bed as soon as possible. This helps to improve the blood circulation in your body and helps prevent blood clots forming. After time pain eases and suggestion of light exercise when the stitches have been removed may be advised. If you still feel uncomfortable with what you are having to face it is a good idea to speak to someone who may have had a hysterectomy, however this can have its perks where you will either feel better on hearing it straight from the horses mouth so as to speak, or feel down because like stated before “women vary in their suffering” so the best approach is to talk to some one in the medical profession

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. QUESTION:
Has anyone gotten pregnant after having 4 or more fibroids on the inside lining of their womb?
I am in my late 30’s and have never tried to conceive before, but now am worried, as the NHS will not fund any treatment until I try to conceive for a year.

    • ANSWER:
My sister does and she is pregnant- only took her 4 months.
Just keep trying on your own- get the ovulation kit so you know exactly when to try- leave less room for mistake.
She is at high risk, but so far everything is ok. Most likely a c-section is in store for a woman with fibroids, having a baby by vag. birth can cause the fibroids to burst.
      Keep trying and good luck!

  2. QUESTION:
hello , went for scan today , was told i have fibroids in the lining of the womb .?
I am trying to conceive for 18 months after a miscarriage.Does anyone out there have any idea what these are and what can be done so i can have my very much wanted baby .
Thanks for taking the time to answer
    :))

    • ANSWER:
      Hi

In your case hysterectomy- the only surgical procedure which gives permanent relief from fibroids is ruled out. In this procedure entire womb is removed- basically it means an end to your capacity to bear children in future.

First and foremost do not despair. Usually you can have both fibroids as well as pregnancy which is safe and normal. However if your fibroids have been diagnosed in the preconception stage it is better to shrink fibroids naturally before you conceive.

  3. QUESTION:
please help!! any home remedies to cure my fibroids in my womb.?

    • ANSWER:
      Hi Mary,

Dr. John Lee had great success in treating fibroids with bioidentical progesterone. Fibroids are estrogen driven, meaning estrogen makes them grow. Progesterone is our natural “anti-estrogen”, and it will balance out the effects.

Fibroids are the most common growth of the female genital tract. They are round, firm and benign and commonly grow to the size of a grapefruit. They are often associated with heavy periods and irregular bleeding. After menopause they usually wither away.

Fibroids are one of the most common reasons that women have a hysterectomy. Natural progesterone offers a better alternative because fibroid tumors, like breast fibrocysts, are a product of estrogen dominance. Estrogen dominance stimulates their growth and Dr. Lee in his book comments that estrogen dominance is a much greater problem than is recognized by contemporary medicine.

When estrogen dominance is counterbalanced with natural progesterone they no longer grow in size and will generally decrease in size and at menopause they will atrophy.

Check out his website at http://www.johnleemd.com and read through some of the articles. Very informative.

      WHAT TO DO:
      * Use natural progesterone cream.
      * Eat a plant-based, fiber rich diet (at least 20-30g fiber per day)
      * Take a liver-supporting and detoxifying herbal formula that includes the following herbs: Bupleurum, milk thistle (silybum marianum), barberry or goldenseal, burdock root, yellow dock, dandelion root.
      * Take a uterus-healing herbal formula that includes some or all of the following herbs: myrrh, red raspberry, cayenne, Bupleurum, yarrow, vitex and lady’s mantle (Alchemilla mollis)
      * Use a castor oil pack 2-4 times a week (many books on herbal healing have instructions on how to make and use a castor oil pack.)

      WHAT TO AVOID:
      * Unopposed estrogen
      * Dairy products
      * Feed-lot meats (eat only range-fed, organic meats free of drugs and pestiside residue)
      * Coffee (heavily sprayed with DDT)

These measures may not “cure” your fibroids, but they will certainly lessen the pain.

      Good luck!

  4. QUESTION:
the doc said i should try 2 get preg cuz they may have 2 take the womb out with the fibroids?
thats why i was asking about ovulex

    • ANSWER:
I don’t know anything about ovulex, but I do know something about fibroids, having had them myself.

      1. You do not have to have a hysterectomy just because you have fibroids. If your fibroids are not currently causing you any problem, you can ignore them. If they are causing problems, there are other treatments that will help without having a major chunk of your body removed. Note: fibroids are not in and of themselves dangerous. I don’t even think anyone has died from complications from fibroids (and I’ve heard about one person who had a fourty-one pound fibroid removed!).

      2. Fibroids can make it harder for you to get pregnant. Therefore if you want to have children, don’t expect to get pregnant the minute you start trying. It may take two or three years or more. IOW, if you want to have kids, start trying now to have kids. But you don’t have to get pregnant this month, you just want to be aware that it will take longer than normal for you to get pregnant. If your doctor was implying that you needed to get pregnant immediately in case your health was threatened by the fibroids, he or she was out of line.

      3. People have been treated for fibroids with myomectomy and uterine arterial embolization and gone on to have children. In fact, it looks like myomectomy at least will increase the chances of getting pregnant, although I would not recommend this until it’s been determined that you are unable to conceive otherwise.

Be aware that some physicians treat the uterus an unnecessary organ except for having children. In addition, some unethical physicians let the fact that hysterectomies generate more income as factor in their treatment advice.

  5. QUESTION:
if I was abused as child could it caused fibroids tumers in the womb?
I know I started my period at 11 and at a certain time for four years because I was being messed with I had irregally periods. pne of the things that can happen is irregally periods I do know from fibroids tumers could this have been what have been what have been happpening when I was a tennage. no one took me to a doctor. it now been picked up and am now 46 and luckly it is small could this been cause by abuse and negegate that they did? I do not know. Just wondering what are your thoughts

    • ANSWER:
Fibroids are almost always benign. They are found in many women your age, and are not caused by any of the things you have mentioned. There is no real known cause of fibroids. They develope as a woman ages, and generally cause only very minor problems. When you go through menopause, they will not be exposed to your normal hormones, and usually shrink.
