Signs & Symptoms of Fibroids After Menopause

When there is a rapid growth of fibroids after menopause, the risk of the uterine tumor becoming cancerous increases drastically. Usually fibroids are benign tumors which are non cancerous. The probability of a fibroid tumor becoming malignant is just about 1 in a 1000. This probability changes to 1 in a 100 for women whose uterine tumors start growing rapidly after menopause.

Hence women in the post menopausal stage must be very cautious and consult a doctor immediately upon noticing any of the following symptoms:

1.Pain

Fibroid tumors can cause pelvic pain and pain during intercourse. Depending on the location of the uterine tumor, bowel movements can also become painful. Many women suffer from lower back pain due to the pressure generated by the tumor on the internal organs.

2.Urinary Symptoms

Women with fibroid tumors that are attached to the uterine wall near the bladder may experience urinary problems. These include difficulty in passing urine or very frequent urination. This happens because the fibroid tumor as it increases in size begins to press on the bladder.

3.Pelvic Pressure

As the uterine tumor grows in size it can cause a feeling of heavy pressure in the pelvic area. Some women may even be able to feel a hard spot through the skin when the area is examined. This happens because large sized fibroids distort the shape of the uterus and press on organs near the uterus.

4.Abdominal Bloat

Abdominal bloating is very common in women suffering from fibroids.

Scientifically growth of fibroids after menopause is a remote possibility. This is because post menopause the body stops producing estrogen which is the factor responsible for fibroids growth. However in some rare cases the uterine tumors continue to grow even after menopause. This is a cause of concern which must be closely monitored to ensure that the tumor does not become malignant.

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. QUESTION:
Women with fibroids what were your symptoms?
I have been having very heavy painful periods but short periods no more then 3 to 4 days. I am 37. Lots of small clots. Wondering if this is a sign of having a fibroid? My sister had fibroids recently and bled for like 3 months straight before she got it removed and that is NOt me so Im trying to figure out from those with them what their symptoms are. Thanks

    • ANSWER:
My periods were lasting 3-4 days and I felt soooo lucky.
Then while I was vacationing in the Dominican Republic this
past december, I thought I was okay because I had my period at the beginning of dec. BUT on December 26 I started my period again and it lasted for 15 days !!! I got it again on Feb 02 for 7 days!
So worried as I was (I’m in your age group by the way) I made an appointment to see my doctor, I didn’t know what it could be, I had always been regular. Was I going through premenopause ?
Sooo, my doc gave me an internal examination, did a pap smear,
gave me calcium and Vitamin D and sent me for blood tests and a pelvic ultrasound. I went for my blood tests last week and next Monday the 26th, I go for my pelvic ultrasound. I guess I should find out what is going on by the 2nd week of March. Keeping my fingers crossed !
Go see your doc ! Don’t take any chances.
      Good Luck.
You can email me during the 2nd week of March and I’ll tell you what my results show.

  2. QUESTION:
HCG Test was negative, but feeling pregnant?
I had an HCG Test done and the level found was 1. And I know that is negative, but I have all of the signs and symptoms of being pregnant, as I have had 2 children already. But what they did find was 2 fibroids, could this be causing my symptoms? I have the dizziness, nausea, swollen and tender breasts, bloating…etc. etc. Please give me some insight as to what could be causing this false pregnancy feeling….

    • ANSWER:
Have you been trying to get pregnant or want to be pregnant? If so your mind could be tricking your body into thinking you are. I know it sounds weird, but it happens all the time.

  3. QUESTION:
Hmm, wondering if these are signs of conception?
Read a couple websites about symptoms, but just felt like asking for past experiences.
First day of last period was June 21, had sex every other day thru fertile days of July 1st thru the 5th, and hips elevated for 30 min. after.
I do also have 2 small uterine fibroids so I was told by my doctor that although those are common and not a huge deal, they make conceiving harder?
Breasts were super sensitive and kind of sore the 10th thru 12th. Got period-like cramps the 16th and 17th, but no period. Brown spotting the past 2 days with a mild cramp here or there (could just be the start of period?) but no bleeding yet, and for the past 5 days I have gotten up like 6 times in the night to have to pee (I thought maybe I had UTI)
Just gonna wait and see if I get my period, but just thought I’d ask you ladies who have had these symptoms before

    • ANSWER:
Your fertile days were probably the 5th and 6th of July. SO hopefully you ovulated on one of those days and there was sperm there to fertilize. Right now your are probably implanting that is what the spotting could be from since your next period is still a few days away. Your best time to test would be on the 28th which is one week past. Good Luck I hope you get the answer you were looking for.

  4. QUESTION:
What can cause pregnancy symptoms other than pregnancy?
It’s a possibility that I am 6 weeks pregnant. If I am, it hasn’t shown on my last test which was about a week ago.

    – My breasts are sore and tender. And the nipples are darker and I have a dark outline around my areola.
    – My period is a month late on Weds. with no signs of coming and no PMS what so ever.
    – I had a slight spotting last week but it was only when I wiped and it looked like dried blood. Only lasted about half a day. Didn’t even need a liner.
    – I had cramping during weeks 2-5, but it’s died down a lot now. It was in my lower abdomen, right below my belly button.
    – Mild nausea. Occasionally I’ll feel like I have to burp and I throw up a bit. Also when I’m brushing my teeth I start gagging.

I’m not looking to be pregnant. If I am that’s great! If not, that’s great too! I’m only 20, no rush for a baby. I just don’t understand what it could be.

I was checked for fibroids, cysts and a UTI. All negative. But according to First Response I’m not pregnant. My doctor can’t tell me what’s wrong with me.
    Any ideas?
Also, I DID have unprotected sex on the day of ovulation.

    • ANSWER:

get thyroid. prolactin.fsh and lh levels done

  5. QUESTION:
Increased clear vaginal discharge good or bad?
Increased clear vaginal discharge to where the underwear is soaked……is that a sign of pregnancy? I also have every symptom of being pregnant (except i havent taken a test yet). But I also know that I have fibroids and ovarian cysts.

    • ANSWER:
Some females experience more discharge when they are pregnant, some don’t. I never did. Best to take a test.

      Different Types of Discharge:

White: Thick, white discharge is common at the beginning and end of your cycle. Normal white discharge is not accompanied by itching. If itching is present, thick white discharge can indicate a yeast infection.

Clear and stretchy: This is “fertile” mucous and means you are ovulating.

Clear and watery: This occurs at different times of your cycle and can be particularly heavy after exercising.

Yellow or Green: May indicate an infection, especially if thick or clumpy like cottage cheese or has a foul odor.

Spotting Blood/Brown Discharge: May happen right after periods, and is just “cleaning out” your vagina. Old blood looks brown. This may occur when you are ovulating/mid-cycle.

      Different types of infections:

      Signs of yeast infections:
      White, cottage cheese-like discharge
Swelling and pain around the vulva
      Intense itching
      Buy Monistat 7 over-the-counter

      Signs of bacterial vaginosis:
A white, gray or yellowish vaginal discharge
A fishy odor that is strongest after sex or after washing with soap
      Itching or burning
Slight redness and swelling of the vagina or vulva
      See a doctor
