Frequently Asked Questions

  1. QUESTION:
Have you had a uterine fibroid related to pregnancy that you can feel through your abdomen?
I just had a baby and while still in the hospital, the day after giving birth, I felt a nodule the size of a quarter on the top of my uterus. The doctor felt it and said he thinks it may be a uterine fibroid and will check it at my 6 week post baby check up because by that time, it would most likely shrink due to decreasing levels of pregnancy hormones. I am pretty scared at the moment. I did not have fibroids with my first child.

    • ANSWER:
I am currently pregnant and have 3 fibroids, one that is about 8 cm at the top of my uterus. Recently my belly got bigger and I can no longer feel the fibroid through my skin. A quarter sized fibroid is nothing to worry about. They grow during pregnancy because you produce more hormones and tend to shrink after you give birth. They are non-cancerous and you shouldn’t worry — your baby is fine, be thankful.

  2. QUESTION:
How can a fibroid affect the pregnancy?
After my first ultrasound at 5 weeks pregnancy they found a little amniotic sac in my uterus and also two fibroid ( one aprox. 4x4x4 and the other aprox. 2x2x2). How are they going to interfere with my preganancy? Am I safe?

    • ANSWER:
Complications during pregnancy due to fibroids is rare. Please talk to your doctor regarding your concerns. You can get information on the net, but your doctor can address your specific situation. Remember that many women have fibroids, and the far majority do not experience any complications in pregnancy. My best wishes to you…..

“Can a fibroid tumor harm the baby?
Probably not. Even if you do experience symptoms, they most likely won’t affect the baby. However, your risk of miscarriage and premature delivery does increase slightly if you have fibroids. They occasionally cause the baby to be in an abnormal position for delivery. They can also stall labor, or, if they’re located in or near the cervical opening, they may block the baby’s passage. All of these (rather rare) problems can increase the likelihood of cesarean delivery.”

“Most women with fibroids have no more trouble becoming pregnant than women who do not have fibroids, and their risk of a bad pregnancy outcome is no higher.”

  3. QUESTION:
How can a fibroid tumor affect my pregnancy?
I am 22 years old and about 8 weeks pregnant. My doctor told me I have a fibroid tumor and immediately i was worried about my baby. I asked him how it could affect my pregnancy and he said it could cause miscarriages or pre-term labor. He would’nt give me any other answers. I’m wondering how else could it affect my baby, how common are complications, and anything else anyone could tell me about this. I’m so worried please help!!

    • ANSWER:
I was told the same thing before I got pregnant and when I did get pregnant I was in a constant stress worrying about having a miscarriage. Thankfully my baby is fine. As long as you are in or past your 2nd trimester your baby is fine. Fibroids tend to shrink or expand but more often they shrink due to pregnancy hormones.
But if you are still worried, consult another ob or specialist to ease your mind. All that worrying can affect your baby.
