Fibroids surgery recovery time
Uterine fibroids are non-cancerous outgrowths of uterus. These are benign tumors and very common among females. These are innocuous and are usually small. About 30-40% of the women all over the world have fibroids. However these are more common in black women as compared to whites. Black women have 50 percent more probability of having fibroids as compared to Caucasians. Fibroids are more common in women of the age group of 25-35 years and it is very rare to have these young girls. Women who have reached menopause have no chances of developing fibroids.
The origin of fibroids is still under shadows. Until now, no exact causes of fibroids have come to the knowledge of researchers. A lot of factors have thought to be the possible cause of fibroids such as insufficient diet, birth control pills, obesity etc. But nothing has been concluded yet. On the other hand, enlargement of fibroids is attributed to the increased level of estrogens. Estrogen is principally a female hormone that is related with the female sexual development. In addition to this role, it is also responsible for increasing the size of fibroids. Estrogen dominance is characterized by increase in the level of estrogen and a corresponding decrease in the level of progesterone. This hormonal imbalance can lead to a substantial increase in size of fibroids. Also, women keep on producing estrogen as long as they are menstruating and so fibroids keep on enlarging, if any.
There are no characteristic symptoms of fibroids. However, some of the common symptoms include heavy bleeding, pain in abdomen, feeling of filled bladder etc. Heavy bleeding is caused by some irregularities in menstrual cycle. In some cases, it can initiate anemia. Such patients should be treated with iron supplements so that they no longer remain deficient in iron.
Sometimes fibroids become so large that they outclass a large-size pumpkin. According to US department of health, the largest fibroid that has ever been reported was of 140 pounds. Although, it is very uncommon to have such fibroids, yet fibroids that weigh up to 30 pounds are not very rare. These large-size fibroids have truly become a source of nuisance. In such cases, surgery becomes inevitable. The fibroids surgery recovery time varies, depending upon the type of surgery and the age of patient.
There are lots of methods for the treatments of fibroids. These include hormonal methods, herbal methods and surgical methods. Hormonal therapy uses anti-estrogenic hormones to shrink fibroids. Although, this method is effective, yet is not used as stand-alone method. This is because it provides a temporary way-out and is unable to prevent the recurrence of fibroids. Herbal methods are also effective but they take too much time to yield the desired results.
Surgical methods include myomectomy and hysterectomy. The former one is the surgical removal of fibroids while the latter is the surgical removal of uterus. Mostly females avoid hysterectomy as it causes infertility. On the contrary, myomectomy is usually preferred and in this case fibroids surgery recovery time is about four weeks.
