Frequently Asked Questions

  1. QUESTION:
    Fibroid tumor on ovary?
I was wondering if anyone out there can give me some info and relate to what is happening. Basically, here is what is going on:
    Continuous period
    Cramping
    Constipation
    Back aches
Pain in ovary area when standing or sitting and esp, when laying on stomach
    Period gets worse after exercise

I went to the doc and she thinks it is probably a fibroid tumor on my ovary or around there. My mom had a hysterectomy due to this and my sis has these now (can’t afford a hysterectomy). What can I expect? What can I do to help with the pain? I have an appointment for a sonogram on the 5th of June and then a follow up appointment the week after with the doc. I am just wondering about what to do. BTW: I am 28 with three kids and have a history of hormone problems. Thanks ya’ll.

  2. QUESTION:
Does anyone have any information on fibroid tumors and ovary cysts? I was told I had both.?

I have surffed the web on this but I was hoping someone had personal experience to give me. Thanks

    • ANSWER:
Hello! I have both and was diagnosed with these at a very young age, I was only 18 years old. I had just had my second child, I was sure if I was ever going to have another child and that was scary at my young age. First of all like 80% of women get these during there life time. Fibroids are tumors that grow inside or outside your uterus. Your gyno may want to watch them every few months by have a internal ultrasound, to measure the size, if they start growing rapidly your doctor may ask if you would like them removed, sometimes this ends up in hysterectomy. Fibroids cause lots of bleeding. They grow from hormones. Cysts, well those ones are painful. I was also diagnosed early with these as well, I think I was about 16. I was at work and one exploded and I became seriously ill. My doctor still hasnt done anything about mine, and things just keep getting worse. I recommend that you do not ignore these at all. I was actually just reading somewhere online and it said something about how a cancerous tumor can accidentally be misdiagnosed as a fibroid. If you go into yahoo.com and type in these medical terms ex ovarian cysts, or uterine fibroids, you can pull up a lot of information about them. Thats where I have done most of my research because my doctor didnt give me anything to read about, I left the doctors office as a young teen mom thinking I have cysts and tumors, what does this mean, I was frightened. If treated well you will be healthy I am sure. I still have problems, but guess what, almost 2 years ago, after being told I couldnt have any more kids, my cysts were getting worse and fibroids filled my uterus completely, I was pregnant and not with one but with two! They are my angels! I am also giving you two links one for each medical issue. This site is a very good one to get any answers from, and good luck, and make sure you keep your appointments about these issues.

  3. QUESTION:
I have a Fibroid and a cyst on my ovary, would surgery help?

    • ANSWER:
Nobody on YA! is going to have the expertise to advise you appropriately. Talk it over with your surgeon.

  4. QUESTION:
I have polycystic ovaries, a fibroid and a possible mass. Why doesn’t the doctor want to remove the fibroid
This is very frustrating for me. I will be 30 in two days and I have never been pregnant. I was diagnosed with PCOS about 10 years ago. I had a laparoscopy done in 2004 because of pain in the pelvic area. They told me I had scar tissue and they removed what they could. Also, they could not confirm whether the right tube was open. Last year, I went to a Reproductive Endocrinologist and he prescribed Metformin. I took that for 4-5 months but it made me sick so I stopped. Since then my periods have been regular, but very heavy and painful. I had an ultrasound last month and it showed a 4″ fibroid on my uterus and a mass on my right ovary. They referred me to an OBGYN doctor and he had me do an HSG. The HSG confirmed that both tubes are open, the left one was slow to respond but the dye eventually spilled out. Yesterday I had my appointment with the OBGYN and he did a ultrasound to look at the mass. He said he is unsure if it is a mass or another small fibroid, but my problem is …
I don’t feel comfortable with how the doctor is treating my condition. He basically told my husband and I that we need to figure out if we want to have a baby then he can help us in that area. I asked him about the fibroid and the mass and he didn’t seem concerned at all. I was always told that you could not get pregnant if you had a fibroid. The doctor said he delivers babies all the time when women have fibroids. But sometimes there is pain and sometimes there isn’t, so am I supposed to just deal with the pain? He said my options if I am not trying to get pregnant right now are to take birth control pills, and if I am trying to get pregnant he can prescribe Clomid or something like that. He said I have enlarged ovaries (which I have been told before) and he said because they are so large he doubts that I am ovulating (same thing another doctor told me). So with that said, why isn’t he trying to help me get that resolved …
instead of just blowing off the fact that I have PCOS and I have pain? What should I do? I have been to several OBGYN’s.

In my mind, I want the fibroid removed and I want him to identify whether or not the mass is actually a mass, another fibroid, a cyst, etc. He said the mass could be a swollen tube. But doesn’t he want to confirm that? I feel as if most doctors talk very fast and try to explain things and just kind of force you into thinking there’s nothing wrong with your body. At my first appointment with this doctor, he said surgery was a possibility, especially if the right tube was still blocked (as they confirmed in 2004). But it turned out that the HSG was normal so that wasn’t an issue. But why would he want to leave the fibroid in there. It’s almost like I would be trying to get pregnant, knowing I don’t ovulate and knowing I have polycystic ovaries, a fibroid and a mass.

    • ANSWER:
Likely the reason he is not wanting to remove the fibroid at this time is because you don’t have kids. Removing it can cause scarring that can prevent you from conceiving or carrying a pregnancy full term.
If you choose to try to have kids there are drugs that can often shrink a fibroid enough to create an environment that is good for pregnancy.
If you feel uncomfortable with this doc you should look for a new one or speak with him again. Explain to him you are not understanding some things and that you would like him to go over everything with you.

As far as the pcos and enlarged ovaries. There is no cure unfortunately. There is nothing the doctor can do to fix the ovaries. The treatment options are few. A low sugar, low carb diet is one and metformin. Maybe you can handle a lower dose of metformin.

Really the treatments for all these conditions you suffer from really depend on whether you want to have children or not.

  5. QUESTION:
how do you know if your pregnant if you have a cyst on one of your ovaries and fibroid tumors in your uterus?

    • ANSWER:
I am sure a pregnancy test would tell still. Go to your doctor and have them perform one.
