Anterior cruciate ligament surgery more commonly known as ACL reconstruction is a surgical procedure designed to stabilize the knee by replacing a torn ligament. It is indicated after some ACL injuries and your orthopedic surgeon can help you decide if the procedure is right for you. The Anterior cruciate ligament surgery is generally done using a small arthroscopic camera, working through incisions placed at the knee. A graft is secured in the knee to function as a new ACL. Unfortunately always a simple repair by treating the torn ligament and putting back the fragments together does not become effective.

A successful repair involves completely replacing the torn ligaments. If the ligament is completely torn, it will not heal. Some individuals elect to leave the knee without an anterior cruciate ligament, and some choose Anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction of the ligament. If the knee has a deficient anterior cruciate ligament, the individual relies on the other three ligaments to stabilize the joint. The Arthroscopic Anterior cruciate ligament Reconstruction is the incidence of post operative neuromas of the infrapatellar branch of the saphenous nerve. Doctors prefer the patellar tendon as a graft, although recent reports have found no significant difference between patellar tendon and hamstring grafts.
