Fibroids and treatment (Ladies)?
I just found out a have several fibroids. Yesterday the doctor did an ultrasound after a pelvic exam to confirm his diagnosis. I got a referal to an GYN doctor for treatment and it will be a few days before I get to see her. I was reading on the web the different treatment options and for those who opted for BC did you fibroids come back? I’m 31 y/o with a history of cervial dysplisia. Was curious if maybe I should opt for surgrey. I know I have to discuss this with my doctor but was wondering what you did and would you recommend it. TY.

I am pregnant and have one fibroid that is a little larger than a golf ball, I did not know I had fibroids before I got pregnant so I do not know how it will react after my hormones return to normal but here is my opinion on treatment options. By bc do you mean birth control? I have not seen any information that proves that BC works effectively, plus I am allergic to the hormones so I cannot take it anyway but if I were you I would do some more research on that option. Then there is the option to have embolization where they burn the fibroid out, this can cause infertility and the fibroids can return. Another option is to have a stint put into the blood vessels supplying the fibroids thus killing them off, this too can cause infertility and again the fibroids can grow in other places. I would personally not go with the last two options since I am planning on having more children. Finally you can have a partial hysterectomy which again I would not want because of family planning conflicts. Last there is a hormone therapy that can cause negative side effects like unusual hair growth and hair loss as well as many other unpleasant issues. Once you stop the therapy the fibroids can come back. If the fibroids are not causing you any trouble you can leave them and have them monitored which is what I plan to do until I am finished having children. From there my second choice for treatment if the fibroids are causing me problems would be to have the embolization or stint procedures. Really it is up to you and depends on your situation. If they are causing you problems then whatever works best for you is what matters. Good luck

Yes I was treated for Uterine Fibroids last year and I had a myomectomy (where they were surgically removed). I would recommend the surgery if the fibroids were very big, there were many of them, and they caused different symptoms such as heavy bleeding, infertility, and pain.What have you done so far? Now are there many options and alternatives to surgery such embolization.

Why are Fibroids so common in women yet doctors do not know what cause them?
Fibroids supposidely affect 30% of women (don’t quote me on that stat but I know the number is very high) (as many as 50 percent of African American women over the age of 35 have fibroids source: http://www.womenshealthmatters.ca/centres/pelvic_health/fibroids/ ) and doctors know what they are, they know the symptoms, they have some treatment options but doctors DO NOT understand WHY FIBROIDS OCCUR! This is very alarming and frustrating. I think more research should be dedicated to fibroids and their cause. If it was a male problem I suspect so many years would not go by without more research into understanding this fibroid issue which can cause anguish for many woman. Not sure if other countries have a better understanding of fibroids but living in the USA we should have more insight into this very common female problem. Please post any good links or resources found on people doing fibroid research around the world or any helpful links on treatment options especially robotic assisted surgery (da vinci process) for fibroids. The pill might help make them grow more slowly, but nothing will get rid of them except hysterectomy, embolization, or myomectomy (removal of just the fibroids). Or, well, I guess you could go on Lupron to shrink them. But that’s not natural or inexpensive. If I were you i’d go for embolization.

QUESTION:
has anyone heard of abdominal embryo transfer?
It’s like IVF but they go in through your abdomen instead of the vagina. I was told since my cervix was too high to do fertility treatments, another option would be to get IVF but the cather would go in the stomach. I am 33 years old, had 2 myomectomies (fibroids removed) and my cervix is still too high. The specialist that i am seeing has never done the IVF through the abdomen so, i will be looking for another doctor to do this but i’ve looked on the internet, with no success, to see if anyone else has heard of this and i can’t find anything. Long story short, my cervix is too high to try fertility treatments like HSG, artificial insemination, etc and i don’t know what procedures i can do to bring my cervix down. i think this may be my only option to try and conceive. If this doesn’t work, i may need to adopt. Oh and i live in Oklahoma if that helps. Any help, advice, links would be appreciated. Thanks-

I haven’t heard of laparoscopic embryo transfers to the uterus but there is a procedure called zygote intrafallopian transfer (ZIFT) where they place the embryo in the fallopian tube via laparoscopy and it makes its way to the uterus. My guess is this is what your current RE believes would work best for you. The success rates for ZIFT are pretty good but the cost is higher than it is for doing an IVF cycle because it is a surgery. I would really get a second opinion to be on the safe side.As for a clinic in Oklahoma that does ZIFT, Tulsa Center for Fertility does as does Henry G. Bennett Jr. Fertility Institute.
