Uterine Fibroids In Pregnancy

Having Uterine Fibroids During Pregnancy

Fibroids are an overgrowth of the middle layer of the uterus. Although they are often small and therefore problem-free, some can grow particularly large and prevent implantation. Fortunately, fibroids are usually benign and only become malignant in less than 0.5% of cases.

Whether or not fertility is affected largely depends on the location of, and the size of fibroids. If conception has occurred, uterine fibroids during pregnancy usually cause no problems but there are occasions when they can cause issues ranging from mild to severe.

Uterine fibroids during pregnancy can sometimes prevent the implantation of a fertilized egg. This can happen when the fibroids are located deep in the layers of the uterus (submucosal). If their size or location has distorted the uterine cavity, implantation can be impossible. Although it will sometimes still occur in these circumstances, there can be an undiagnosed early miscarriage.

During the middle three months, fibroids during pregnancy can cause a condition called “red degeneration”. This can cause bleeding and may be painful. It happens when the blood supply to a fibroid is interrupted. If this occurs, it is best to seek medical advice, although in most instances the condition settles down without intervention.

The effects of uterine fibroids during pregnancy can often be felt during the last trimester. As the growing baby competes with the fibroids for space inside the uterine cavity, this can sometimes cause discomfort and in rare cases, an early delivery. However, if this happens, it is usually close to term and does not adversely affect the development of the baby.

Finally, if fibroids are located near to the cervix, this could cause a blockage during delivery. In this instance, a cesarean is likely to be recommended. Usually this type of situation is monitored during the pregnancy as the growing uterus can sometimes affect the location of the fibroids as time progresses.

Fibroids are a condition which respond very well to natural remedies and they are an ideal condition to treat because as they are so rarely life-threatening. It makes complete sense to try out a natural treatment for fibroids before resorting to surgery or any of the hormonal drugs which can cause their own side effects. Although fibroids during pregnancy are usually manageable, it is wise to look at natural treatments, even if you haven’t yet conceived. 2. QUESTION:
    Conception, pregnancy and uterine fibroids?
I am 29 and trying to conceive for the first time. A couple of days ago I had a pre-conception check-up and was diagnosed with two fibroids in my uterine wall: one 1cm big (pea-sized), the other – 2.5 cm big (walnut-sized). The doctor said they will most probably not interfere with my ability to conceive and have a normal pregnancy, and that for now we should just leave them as they are.
I am still, however, not at ease. If you have ever had a uterine fibroid, could you please share your experience? How old were you when diagnosed, how big were they, did you have them removed, did you get pregnant without surgery or after surgery, how did the pregnancy go?
Please don’t refer me to medical websites – I have been browsing through a lot of them; I just want to hear some real-life experiences. Thank you!

PS – Any professional comments would also be highly appreciated, thank you!

      Hi,

I’m currently 19 weeks pregnant and have a number of fibroids. I wasn’t aware that I had them when i feel pregnant and so far, everything is going fine. They have caused a little bit of discomfort and because they grow quicker during pregnancy, you may appear bigger than you should. One of them did play up a bit a few weeks back but after a week of taking naprogesic’s (which my Obs told me was fine), they settled and all is good.

All in all, my baby is growing and developing well and I wish you well with getting pregnant.

  3. QUESTION:
Is it normal to bleed in pregnancy when you have uterine fibroids?

    • ANSWER:
Not exactly normal but some types of fibroids can cause this.
You should talk to a doctor or midwife about this as it could cause premature delivery.

  4. QUESTION:
Have you had a uterine fibroid related to pregnancy that you can feel through your abdomen?
I just had a baby and while still in the hospital, the day after giving birth, I felt a nodule the size of a quarter on the top of my uterus. The doctor felt it and said he thinks it may be a uterine fibroid and will check it at my 6 week post baby check up because by that time, it would most likely shrink due to decreasing levels of pregnancy hormones. I am pretty scared at the moment. I did not have fibroids with my first child.

    • ANSWER:
I am currently pregnant and have 3 fibroids, one that is about 8 cm at the top of my uterus. Recently my belly got bigger and I can no longer feel the fibroid through my skin. A quarter sized fibroid is nothing to worry about. They grow during pregnancy because you produce more hormones and tend to shrink after you give birth. They are non-cancerous and you shouldn’t worry — your baby is fine, be thankful.

  5. QUESTION:
    TTC and have Uterine Fibroids?
I am 29 yo, and mother of two children (ages 5 and 2). I am TTC my 3rd child.
About 1 year ago at my annual exam, my OBGYN found two uterine fibroids. Very small. One the size of a pea, one the size of a nickel.
Since then I lost 30 pounds, and am preparing to be pregnant again. But I am worried about those fibroids (even though 2 mos ago my doc said they have shrunk b/c of my healthier lifestyle).
I want to go through a midwife this time, but wonder if they would accept me, or would they consider me “high risk”.

I’m just worried about those fibroids in pregnancy. Any advice from those who have been there, or professional opinions?

    • ANSWER:
Depending on the exact location of the fibroids (in the cavity or endometrium) Many women go on to have perfectly normal uneventful pregnancies. Fibroids cause problems if they are so large they get in the way of a growing pregnancy (limit space) or are too close to the site of implantation (in the endometrium) and cause placental abruption. However, your sound too small to worry about (Good job on the healthier lifestyle, btw!!) and are probably still shrinking.

As far as midwives go. Yes, they can handle high risk. I think it would be different if you had Diabetes or some other chronic illness, then I would see an OB, but midwives always have physician consults if something goes wrong. I think you’d be fine using a midwife. Always ask though, no harm finding out.

Also, as bit of trivia. Midwives have a higher rate of sucessful managed VBAC.
