Fibroids and Menopause – Do Uterine Fibroid Symptoms Disappear With Menopause?
One of the popular methods to treat fibroids is to do nothing about it. Doctors often recommend the wait and watch approach to women close to menopausal age. However contrary to popular conventional theory, in some women uterine fibroid symptoms get worse during or after menopause. Often fibroids and menopause can happen together.
Estrogen is mainly responsible for boosting the growth of fibroid tumors in uterus. During menopause the production of estrogen decreases by almost 50-60%. Logically if the body does not produce enough hormones to feed the uterine tumor, it should automatically start shrinking on its own.
However you will be surprised to know that irrespective of age, in many women during the post menopausal stage, the symptoms of fibroids start getting worse. In these women the uterine tumor grows despite the fall in levels of estrogen which occurs at menopause.
Why does this happen?
Substances which act exactly like estrogen are referred to Estrogen Mimickers. There are “good” estrogen mimickers and “bad” ones. The former are known as phytoestrogens and are usually found in vegetables. This type of mimicker ensures that the body maintains good level of estrogen balance at all times.
The “bad” estrogen also known as xenoestrogens refer to artificial chemicals. These chemicals are capable of disrupting the entire endocrine system and reproductive functions. They can cause several other health problems like breast cancer, fibroids and endometriosis.
Xenoestrogens are found commonly in household detergents and cosmetics. They are present in the hormones used to feed livestock which produces meat and milk. Pesticides used to grow fruits and vegetables contain this type of estrogen mimickers. It is also found in plastic containers which hold our food and water. Xenoestrogens cause fibroids to grow irrespective of whether estrogen is produced naturally by our bodies or not. Therefore fibroids continue to grow in women in the post menopausal phase too resulting in the uterine fibroid symptoms getting severe. This is also the reason for rise in number of women suffering from fibroids these days.
How to tackle this problem?
Do not be under the impression that fibroids and menopause do not mix. Start following simple natural remedies which can be easily made a part of your daily diet and routine. Go for organically grown foodstuff wherever possible. Avoid using cosmetics and detergents which contain harmful chemicals that may aggravate the growth of fibroid tumors in uterus. Try using glass or ceramic containers to store your food and water instead of plastic ones. It is easy to get rid of uterine fibroids symptoms if you follow some of these simple home remedies.

QUESTION:
Why would a woman with fibroids with no symptoms have to have a hysterectomy?
I know a girl that was diagnosed with fibroids about 10 yrs ago. She has no symptoms except she says she can not have kids because her uterus is out of shape due to the fibroids. She also says that her doctor told her she needed a hystercetomy but she talked him out of it. She was in her mid-30s when diagnosed. I thought you could still have kids with fibroids unless you were having really bad symptoms.-
ANSWER:
Obviously she was having really bad symptoms if her uterus is out of shape.
The doctor probably wanted to do a hysterectomy as a preventative measure. Of course it is always the patient’s choice. But her fibroids might grow even more and she might have to have the hysterectomy in the future.

I know I sound crazy but I have been ignoring how I feel for a long time and I just want to know if I have any cause for concern. Thanks!-
ANSWER:
heavy or painful periods, abominal discomfort, bloating, painful defecation, backache, and frequent urination.

QUESTION:
What does it mean when you have a tender and enlarged uterus?
I have always found out that I was pregnant around 4-6 mo into my pregnancy. I took hpts, blood hcgs… and they all came back neg until 4-6 months. Now for the last 4 months, i have had nausea, vomitting, and the whole preggers package. I started have aches in my lower abdomen a week ago and so I went to the E.R. Of course my insurance would cover a urine test this time but not a blood test or sonogram. All the doctor could tell me is that my uterus is tender and enlarged. I kinda know that I’m preggers, but I have been fooled before. I don’t have the accompanying symptoms for fibroids…. I am just confused and I really want the madness to end. My husband and I want to have another child, but I don’t want false hope. And it really becomes uncomfortable in public when people see my belly and ask when am I due. Could it be that the doctor was trying to give hints to me that I was pregnant? I’ve had nothing but spotting for 4 months. Some a little heavy and sometime traces of pink when i wipe, but spotting all the same. With my last two pregnancies this would be alright….. but I really need answers now because I am under a lot of stress and my health is not what it should be and I can’t take the risk of endangering my unborn child if I am pregnant. And if I am, I will be pressured to quit my job by my husband. I know this is long but I need answers please!-
ANSWER:
can you take a pregnancy test? just buy one from the pharmacy and do the test…good luck

QUESTION:
Womens health question, serious answers please?
I was told that I could have endometriosis, it hasn’t been confirmed and that my uterus is enlarged. I don’t have fibroids. Is an enlarged uterus a normal symptom of endo. The cramps are the worst for me after my period is over. My ovaries feel like they are going to burst or something and I feel pressure and pain in all of my lower abdomen and pelvis into my hips and lower back.
I have researched endo and I think there is more to my symptoms than endo. the pain is all the time not just during my period. Has anyone with endo had these symptoms?-
ANSWER:
In some women for whom adenomyosis is present in addition to the Endometriosis, the uterus can be enlarged and appears “boggy” on diagnostics. However, Endo pain can be present at all times throughout the cycle, not just during periods, so it’s possible that Endo alone is causing your symptoms (all of which are indicative of Endo). Your best bet is to see an Endo specialist for additional help and info. Here are some links which might be of assistance:http://www.endometriosistreatment.org

QUESTION:
Is it necessary to take hormone replacement’s while on Lupron Depot even if you don’t have any symptoms?
I was diagnosed about 3 months ago with 3 fibroids in my uterus, so large they told me I was “about 18 weeks”! I was informed that the soonest I could get surgery was in June so the doctor suggested I take Lu pron to ease my pain, stop the growth and lighten my symptoms of which were constant pain and pressure on my bladder, my bowel and horrible cramps. Anyhow, I got the Lu Pron injection a little more than a month ago and was told to wait a month then start taking a prescription of replacement hormones. Estrogen and Progesteron. Question is, If I feel great, better then I felt in years, with no side effects to complain about, just very light headaches and barely noticable warm flashes, is it necessary for me to take the hormones?
I’ve only heard horrible things about Lupron, but I have to say, I feel great!!-
ANSWER:
Yes, especially if your gyno tells you to and prescribes you the hormone replacements.
