Uterine fibroids are a very common among females. Basically, these are abnormal growth of cells in the uterus. Most of the time, they don’t cause any intricacies. They are more common in older women as compared to teenagers. Women who are older than 25 years have greater percentage of fibroids. The reasons of formation of fibroids are not discovered yet. Their growth is associated with female sex hormones i.e. estrogen and progesterone. Estrogens are responsible of increasing the size of fibroids. Each and every women produce estrogen during menstrual cycle. It means that as long as women are menstruating, they will keep on producing estrogen. Accordingly, fibroid will keep on increasing their size, if any. When women reach the stage of menopause, estrogen level decreases. So there are no chances of fibroids in these women.
Uterine fibroids are benign tumors. Benign tumors are those tumors which are not involved in any cancerous doings, unlike malignant tumors. They lack the ability of invading the adjacent cells as they have no malicious aims.
Regarding the symptoms of fibroids, there are no particular symptoms. Each patient bears its own signs. However, some of the common symptoms include heavy bleeding, pain in abdomen etc. In some cases, the blood loss becomes so great that patient suffers severe shortage of red blood cells. This condition is characterized as anemia. The anemic patient should be provided with iron supplements; otherwise the condition may become un-controllable.
For the most part, fibroids occur singly. On the hand, they may also occur in groups. They show immense variation in size. They may be very small or large. The answer of the question “how big can fibroids get” is that they can be as small as pea and can be as large as water melon. According to US department of health the largest ever fibroid was 140 pounds have. Fibroids of 50 pounds have also been reported at various instances but still this very uncommon. On the whole, fibroids are not very large but when they become large, they create a number of problems. These large size fibroids can become a real source of nuisance. They create a lot of discomforts and hinder the routine activities. These fibroids put a lot of pressure on the internal organs, causing a severe abdominal pain. At times, large size fibroids can press some nerve causing spasms of back pain. For pregnant ladies, these become a real source of uneasiness and danger. They can put the life of mother and baby at stake. They can block the uterus, hindering the delivery process. Regarding the cure of these fibroids, hormonal therapies, surgeries and herbal medicines are used. Surgical method involves the removal of either the fibroids (myomectomy) or the removal of uterus (hysterectomy).
