Fibroid Tumors And Weight Gain

Fibroid Tumors 101 – What You Need To Know

Fibroid Tumors

Fibroids are tumors that can grow and develop within a woman’s uterus. They may be tiny in size or grow to weigh several pounds, existing as a single tumor or growing in clusters of small tumors. These muscular tumors grow either within or attach themselves to the wall of the uterus.

While most fibroids are non-cancerous and very common, they can certainly cause women many problems. Fibroid tumors can be extremely painful. They can also cause the need to urinate frequently or excessive bleeding during the woman’s menstrual cycle.

The growth of fibroid tumors is stimulated by estrogen, so fibroids are most common in women over age 20 until they reach menopause. Studies have shown that one in every five women over the age of 35 will experience fibroid tumors. Fibroids seem to be twice as likely in black women as white women, with approximately 50 percent of black women experiencing them and 25 percent of white women experiencing them. Since estrogen stimulates the growth of fibroid tumors, they will typically shrink in size after a woman goes through menopause since the body no longer produces much estrogen at that time.

Women who began their first menstrual cycle before they were 10 years old, women who have never been pregnant and given birth, and women who are obese or significantly overweight are at increased risk for fibroid tumors.

Types of Fibroids

The most common type of fibroid tumor is the intramural fibroid. This is a tumor that is located within the uterine wall, beneath the mucosal surface. These tumors may grow quite large. Submucosal fibroids are found under the muscle near the endometrium. And cervical fibroids occur on or near the cervix.

Most fibroid tumors are benign. They have no symptoms and do not put a woman’s health at risk. Sometimes, the first indication that a woman even has a fibroid tumor is when it is found during a routine pelvic examination.

  1. QUESTION:
Weight gain of over 6 lbs each month with menstral cycle? What can I do?
Every month I bloat up so much that my stomach puffs and my breast look like missles. I have had several surgeries for fibroid tumors, the last was an embolization. The weird thing is that two days after my period ends the weight leaves with it, my breast shrink to normal size and I can again see my toes. Is there anyone out there who can give me any holistic things to try to stop this phenonmena? I’m already fat and this added 6-10 lbs per month is unbearable. I have an HMO so it takes forever to see a doctor and then you get a superficial check-up with no real help. I’m currently taking diuretics but they only alleviate the pain and bloating a little. 2. QUESTION:
    Yasmin birth control pill/weight gain?
My gyno prescribed them to help with my severe cramping and back pain, had a ultrasound to rule out fibroid tumors so this is the next direction she wants to try. My main concern is weight gain, im at the age where nothing I do helps me lose weight and I told the dr that was one of my main concerns was gaining weight. I also have not been on the pill for 10 years since after having my son 9 yrs ago my husband opted for the Vasectomy. I appreciate your help and feedback.

    • ANSWER:
Almost every birth control method can have a side effect of weight gain. Personally, out of all my friends you are on the pill or depo, I have not noticed any weight gain if there is.

I would say don’t worry about it. If you do gain weight it will only be 5 to 10 pounds and most likely not noticable.

You could also ask about depo. I have not experianced any cramping, weight gain or many periods for that matter. I love it and it might be another solution you want to look into.

      Good luck!

  3. QUESTION:
if you get the depo provera shot just once is it possible that you will gain weight before the next shot ?
before the next shot is given? and if i dont get a second shot will the weight gain disappear and how longwill it take? the side effects of this drug scare me because i was told so little about it before i accepted it.So far ive decided im not going to get the next shot which is due in march but does the weight gain go away before march? i know so far ive experienced a lot of breast soreness and this is a month after i got the shot and its worse in the morning , is this part of the side effects and if so what makes this go away? I dont have a personal gynecologist i go to the free clinic near me and they didnt offer a lot of information about this drug except that they want me to take it because i have large fibroid tumors. Anyone with answers for me please help me figure this out. thanks.

  4. QUESTION:
    weight gain, and fast?
    Hello all,
I always eat under my 1200 calorie allotment, i vigourously exercise at MINIMUM 3 times a week for an hour each. I am military, and are on their fitness program w/ professionals. I eat low carbs, no red meat, no simple sugars, rarely drink coke & no fried foods, and drink tons of water. dont get me wrong, im not a perfect eater, and do have a slice of pizza or a small order of onion rings or something occasionally ( once every 3 weeks or so). Last year I lost 30 lbs in 5 weeks, w/o even trying… now i am gaining a lot (i gained 10lbs in a week, then will stabilize then gain 10 in a week and so on, total ive gained 40 lbs in under 6 months). Ive already had my thyroid tested, and its w/in limits, i am not diabetic, however, i was recently diagnosed w. ovarian cysts, and uteriun fibroid tumors…. what I am wondering is if anybobdy has had this problem, or even a similar problem, and what they did about it. I am at the end of my rope, and dont want to get kicked out of the navy. I am working my butt off w/ no results, and am still gaining. I do have a dr appointment coming up, which i will discuss this topic w/ him, but id like real life experiences from others too.

  5. QUESTION:
Can i be on a diet bill and a birth control pill at the same time?
Im 17 years old and im on the birth control because they recently found 2 fibroid tumors in my uterus and it’s supposed to diminish the tumors. Anyways, i heard you gain weight while your on the pill, and i really really really DO NOT want to gain weight, so i was wondering if i can be on the diet pill at the same time?

Im about 5’4-5’5 and i weigh 119 pounds. I dont smoke or drink.

    • ANSWER:
If you’re that concerned about gaining weight, you can try certain diet pills. But research first. Go to www.webmd.com and enter the birth control you’re using in the search engine, along with some of the diet pills you’re looking to try. Search each one individually and see if there’s any ingredients in them that would counteract eachother, or cause any implications. If so – then just eat healthy & exercise. You’re 17, so you’ll be able to maintain your shape pretty well with just that.
