Menopause And Weight Gain -what Can Be Done To Help?
As women approach the age where menopause symptoms begin to appear, some will start to show signs of weight gain. This may be related to the coming of menopause, and it also may just be related to getting a bit older and slowing down in physical activity. Either way, it is not a welcome side effect, and most women want to find a way to stop the weight gain and get back to a slimmer figure if possible.
The question of why this weight gain starts during this time is common it has to do with the decrease in hormones such as estrogen and progesterone. This tends to slow down the metabolism of women, and weight gain is a very real side effect. Also, weight gain after menopause seems to be harder to lose, and the inches tend to accumulate around your abdomen rather than your hips and thighs. However this need not be the outcome if a woman can plan ahead and start to develop habits that will keep her healthier and also a bit slimmer.
Every womans body is different of course, and not every woman will gain weight during the start of menopause. For the ones that do start to gain weight, it is necessary to take steps right away to limit this increase. Here are a few tips:
Exercising more – Menopausal women tend to exercise less than many other women, which can lead to weight gain. The key is to develop habits of getting exercise on a regular basis, either by joining a gym, finding a good hobby like tennis or swimming, or even just going for regular walks every day. It doesnt have to be time-consuming, just as long as it is a regular habit.
Eating less – Eating more means you’ll take in more calories, which are converted to fat if you don’t burn them for energy. Make it a habit of eating less during this beginning of menopause, and if need be eat more meals per day. Eating more meals that are smaller in size and calories helps to keep the metabolism up. Of course, cut back on the sweets! These are high in empty calories.
See your doctor make sure you see your doctor as changes in your metabolism can also mean problems with your health besides just menopause, and you need to be sure.
Take your vitamins also take vitamins that will ensure you get enough nutrients to stay healthy, especially calcium, vitamin D, and other essential vitamins and minerals. Drinking plenty of water will also make sure you stay healthy as well, hydration is very important during this period of a womans health.

QUESTION:
Hi I am having a hysterectomy soon. Uterus and fibroids removed! Will this decreased my sex drive or will?
taking the ovaries decrease the sex drive? If so what can the doctor give me to increase sex drive? Does hormone pills make you gain weight? Only serious people please respond to my question, I am serious. This is important to me, ladies. My fibroids are more painful than child birth!!! And huge enlarged my uterus, looking pregnant ladies, not good when you are not really pregnant!!! Thanks again.-
ANSWER:
I don’t think that taking the ovaries out decreases sex drive. It never did me. I mean it didn’t have any effect at all when I had my hysterectomy.
Gaining weight? There is no known reason why it should make you gain weight. I think what happens is that you wind up feeling free-er without your period every month and you don’t wind up with the cramping every month. You feel better so you eat more. That’s my opinion.
I’ve always heard, that after a hysterectomy that sex actually gets better. Because you don’t have to worry about pregnancy. I didn’t help me any, but it does a lot of women.

QUESTION:
Question about lumpy boobs?
Hi all, I am 23 very normal and active girl. As long as I can remember, or at least as long as I’ve been in touch with my female body (15is) I have always had very lumpy breasts. Some are large some are small, they only grow or shrink when I lose/gain weight. You cant see them just feel them. I have always had very large breast for my age and size and was told when I was younger and to this day that I shouldnt worry that that is just the make of my breast for me. What are the lumps then…like fibroids?-
ANSWER:
My mom has the same thing and her breasts are small. She has had them always like you and she is in her mid 60s. Caffeine did influence hers. The only problem she has is that occasionally they will make her have a biopsy on one just to be safe. When you get to the age to have mammograms just make sure you keep up with them. Since you have lumps already the traditional self exams probably won’t be as productive for you as they are with someone without lumps. If you do notice something different, have it checked just to be safe. I have no medical training, I’m just going on her experiences.

QUESTION:
Do you think I should get medicaid?
Well, I have asthma and I had tha since I was two and now Im 24. Also I have cyst and fibroids which cause extreme pain and weight gain. I have a possibly that I have ploycystic ovary syndrome because of the cyst and fibroids. POS can cause infertilty and sometimes death. Ive tried to get medicaid once before a year back with this and was denied. I live in the stat of Ga. They told me I had to be either under 18, 65 or older, be pregnant or have children. What are your thoughts. Ive been laid off since Nov and when I was working I wasn’t making that much.-
ANSWER:
I recommend looking for a county health department in your area. they can offer services or point you in the right direction for free services. Asthma attacks (unhelped by meds, or if you’re out of meds) are worthy of an ER visit, as is a painful cyst. ER’s can work out a plan with you, or write it off entirely if it’s a true emergency and you truly can’t pay. BUT– a free clinic or health dept can give you a supply of inhalers to last.Try the health dept 1st–they have lots of information for folks hitting hard times!
