QUESTION:
I have had four ultrasound scans in 2 years and results, normal uterus, cysts, normal, fibroid is this normal
Up until late 2004 my uterus was normal. Then I started having irregular periods, I think I miscarried and some pregnancy symptoms didn’t immediately disappear, I went to see a radiologist a few months later, he said I had functional cyst and referred me to a gynaecologist, the doctor did a thorought test and repeat scan and found my uterus perfectly normal, my periods stabilised and for some seven months didn’t have sex. Then I started having sex again, the last time my period was late by a cycle, and like the last time I started spotting when it returned. I decided it will get back to normal on its own… but when I had a bout of severe back pain I got worried and went to see a doctor (a different one…. he sent me for scanning and the result; “2.7cm x 2cm single fibroid, no fluid aroud the pouch of Douglas.” What is the meaning of this – Why did he mention this pouch of douglas? Can the fibroid go away the way the cyst went away or could there have been an error here?-
ANSWER:
the fibroid is not going to go away but it is nothing to be worried about either. fibroids are bening tumors of the muscle cells of the uterus and about 50% of women will develop them. Yours is small and you only have one, nothing much to be concerned about unless it is in the lining of your uterus and then it can cause spotting, but usually a small fibroid like this will not cause much problems at all. Just ignore the remark about the pouch of douglas, that is not significant to any of your issues. they usually mention whether there is or is not fluid in the pelvis-this fluid collects in an area called the pouch of douglas- it has nothing to do with your fibroid or periods. you may want to think about the pill to control your periods if they are bothering you.

QUESTION:
Is this a cyst or a fibroid. Please advice ladies.I am very stressed. I have been through a lot in last 10 mos.?
I had cyst like pain in my left side 2 months back which started soon after my period.I have had left side ovarian cysts earlier and the pain was just the same along with burning while peeing.Always associated with cysts. Also since 2 mos when I am supposed to ovulate from the left side I don’t but from the right side I do ovulate.
I had ultrasound done in June and there was no cyst but 2 weeks back after another ultrasound and the symptoms they found the cyst.
The guy who did my ultrasound was a senior radiologist doctor. He started seeing with the ultrasound on my belly he first said there is NO cyst then after 2-3 mins when he came back to it he found a small functional cyst of 1.9 cm.
He gave me pics of the ultrasound. Now what bothers me is:
Why didnt he find the cyst at first could this mean its a fibroid in the uterus and not a cyst?I have spotting sometimes after heavy exercise, is that also a symptom for an ovarian cyst?
I am very worried about the above 2 things although I acted crazy and went back to the doctor the next day and he said showed me where the cyst is etc on the pics and said with a smile why I am questioning his 20 yrs of experience in radiology. Now what bothers me is he’s not a gynecologist.
I am so worried because I had a stillborn 10 mos back and want to start trying to conceive again and want to be sure this is just a cyst.
Please help me.
-
ANSWER:
It sounds like a cyst to me. I have frequent pain on my right side and my doctor told me it was classic cyst pain. I get it any time during the month. I too had a stillborn 12 months ago, and a late (2nd trimester) miscarriage 3 weeks ago. Ugh, nothing seems to be working out this last year. But cyst or fibroid, I would think you could TTC again. Fibroids are difficult to remove, and cyst generally pose no risk to pregnancies. My doctor thinks my blood clotted in the placenta/umbilical cord in both losses. Nothing related to my occasional cyst.
I hate it when people act all high and mighty when they are the “expert” on things. Your ultrasound tech shouldn’t have given you that attitude, but I think it’s not unusual for a tech to have to search for a little wile to find what they’re looking for.
Are you thinking this is not a cyst but maybe something horrible like cancer. You would have other signs like irregular cycles, and such, but not necessarily pain.
I don’t know if spotting after exercise is a sign of cyst. I usually have no mid cycle spotting, but my sister does a lot and she also gets the occasional cyst.
Good luck with everything.

QUESTION:
Can ovarian cysts cause my stomach to bloat and pooch out?
I started working out a little over two weeks ago. My stomach feels flat when I am done working out, but as soon as I eat something it bloats back up. I do have a lot of excess fat on my stomach and since having my appendectomy in 2004 the fat has dropped (due to the incision going down the center of my stomach). Anyway, I was diagnosed with PCOS (Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome) 10 years or so ago. I was also diagnosed with a 4″ fibroid on my uterus about six months ago. The doctor said it didn’t need to be removed, so I left it at that. But what is my stomach always so bloated? The only time it isn’t bloated is if I don’t eat any food at all.I was diagnosed with IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome) about 8 years or so ago, but really don’t have any symptoms from that except stomach cramping, bloating and gas (especially in the morning).
Will I still be able to lose weight and tone my stomach up even though I have the cysts and fibroid, or will my stomach forever stick out?
-
ANSWER:
You will be able to hun its just harder for women with pcos i managed though. Just keep working out. Oh and green tea helps with the bloating.

QUESTION:
Ovarian cysts… again?
I’ve had 2 surgeries in 9 months. 1st was a fibroid tumor on my uterus, 6cm. 2nd was a cyst on my right ovary, 7cm resulting in the removal of the ovary as well. I went to my OB this past friday for all the same symptoms. He suggested a pelvic ultrasound and birth control. I could only get an appt. for the ultrasound in 2 weeks! I hate this, it’s messing with my life. I couldn’t wait, not 2 weeks working with pain, so I went to the ER. Tada. A 4cm cyst on my one good ovary. Can I elect to have surgery to have a histerectomy? And I’ve switched insurance. Will this be considered a pre-existing condition? I do not plan on having children. I have felt this way for years. The 1st surgery, my doctor wanted to give me time to think. It’s been 2 years, and I’d rather have my health than a baby.-
ANSWER:
The choice to have or have not a hysterectomy is only your. Having a total hysterectomy i.e. remove not only your uterus but your one left good ovary might result in menopause symptoms like hot flashes and other problems. You might consider leaving part of the ovary to prevent you from going into a difficult menopausal period, though have no idea how old you are. As to the insurance you better find out before or postpone your surgery till you have all the facts before you. Good luck.

QUESTION:
Complex Ovarian Mass – Endometrioma or Functional Cyst?
(Re-posted question. I posted last night but only had one response (Thanks for taking the time), but am posting again in the hopes of more responses)
Hi,I was hoping that someone could provide me with some advice. Below are my reports, this has been going on for more than 10 months. I saw one Gynecological Oncologist and she said that the reports show functional cysts (despite having them for 10 months) that will go away by themselve and no treatment is needed. That was last week.
I saw another Gynecological Oncologist this morning for a second opinion and she said that they are Endometrioma. She has scheduled an Trans-vaginal ultrasound for Jamuary 21, and I will get those results from her on February 4, 2009.
I am completely confused. I do not know which one to trust. Worse still – will these continue to grow? What if they are neither? My CA125 was 63. My father died of colon cancer and my paternal Aunt of Breast Cancer.
My first report dated February 8, 2008 states:
Endometrium double layer thickness is just over 7mm.
The uterus is anteverted with overall diameters 37x40x76mms. There
appears to be a fibroid subserosal posterior at the fundus 24x19x14mms.
In the cervix, there is a little cyst 8mms.
The right ovary is 34x28x22mmx. Here we find 2 follicles or a
biloculted cyst with a thick septum, more likely that these represent 2
adjacent follicles.
The septation between the two are little hyper vascular.
The left ovary is 30x30x28mms contains a follicle 13x8mms.
The cul-de-sac is clear and the bladder appear normal.Report 2 dated Sept 22, 2008:
The uterus measures 7.7×4.8×3.7cm. There is a fibroid at the fundus
measuring 2.2cm. Endometrial lining is 0.4cm. In both
adnexa there are abnormalities. On the left there is a complex
primarily solid but inhomogeneous irregular mass measuring
6.1×4.1×3.7cm. On the right there is one measuring 2.5×2.4×2.3cm.* 17 hours ago

Sorry, should have mentioned that I am 37 years old, have never had kids, and got my period when I was 13. Symptoms: bloating pelvic tenderness, lower back and leg pain, headaches, constant need to urinate (sometimes a lot, sometimes a false call!) and extremely tired. Very heavy and painful menses.-

This is a good summary on functional cysts as you see the raised CA125 can be a signhttp://emedicine.medscape.com/article/255865-overview
This covers all kinds of cysts – and you can see quite a few of your symptoms are in their list.I think if either of them thought they were sinister findings you would be getting treated much, much quicker, so I don’t think you need to worry.
Oh, BTW, your fibroid is a reasonable sie and could definately be leading to heavy menses and you could also be anaemic
