The Expanding Role of the Microbiome
Recent research has highlighted the “estrobolome” — the community of gut bacteria that regulate estrogen metabolism and recirculation. Women with reduced gut microbiome diversity have been shown to have higher circulating estrogen levels through impaired estrogen excretion. Studies examining gut microbiome profiles in women with fibroids versus controls have found consistent differences. This is a rapidly developing area — but it supports the dietary recommendations already in place: high-fibre diet, fermented foods, reduced antibiotic use, all of which support microbiome diversity. Vitamin D: The Evidence Base Strengthens
Recent human clinical data has continued to support the Vitamin D-fibroid connection. Studies published in the last few years have found that Vitamin D supplementation in Vitamin D-deficient women with fibroids produces measurable reductions in fibroid volume and symptom scores. Epigenetics and Fibroid Formation
Research into the epigenetic mechanisms underlying fibroid development has clarified how environmental factors — diet, stress, toxin exposure — modify gene expression in uterine smooth muscle cells to initiate fibroid formation. This research explains the biological plausibility of environmental interventions: the same inputs that epigenetically trigger fibroid formation can be modified to reduce that trigger. The lifestyle management framework is increasingly underpinned by epigenetic science rather than being purely observational.
New Medical Treatments
Linzagolix and relugolix — oral GnRH receptor antagonists — have received regulatory approval in several regions as alternatives to injectable GnRH agonists. They produce similar fibroid shrinkage and symptom control in oral daily tablet form, with add-back hormone therapy to reduce bone loss side effects.
