Curcumin — turmeric’s active polyphenol — inhibits the NF-κB pathway, reducing production of pro-inflammatory cytokines. It has documented anti-proliferative effects on leiomyoma (fibroid) cells in laboratory studies, inhibiting cell growth and promoting apoptosis. These are mechanistically relevant findings.

The Evidence Gap

Laboratory findings do not automatically translate to clinical benefit. Human clinical trials specifically examining curcumin supplementation for uterine fibroid treatment are very limited. The evidence is suggestive but not established at the level of the EGCG trial (see our green tea guide).

Practical Use

Given its excellent safety profile and broad anti-inflammatory benefits, including turmeric in daily cooking is low-risk and potentially beneficial. For supplementation: choose a form with piperine (black pepper extract) as curcumin has poor standalone bioavailability — piperine increases absorption approximately 2000%. Standard doses are 500–1,500mg curcumin equivalent daily with food. Combine with the other evidence-based supplements for a compounding anti-inflammatory effect.
