Castor oil packs are among the most widely recommended natural fibroid remedies. Before investing time in them, here is what the evidence actually says.
The Claims vs The Evidence
Claims include improving lymphatic circulation, dissolving fibroid tissue, and reducing inflammation. No randomised controlled trials exist for castor oil packs and uterine fibroids specifically. Castor oil (ricinoleic acid) has documented topical anti-inflammatory properties — but whether these meaningfully penetrate skin and reach uterine tissue is not established.
Risk and Practical Verdict
Generally low risk. Some women with heavy bleeding report worsened flow during application (heat increases pelvic blood flow). Avoid in pregnancy. The main cost is opportunity cost — energy better directed toward Vitamin D, EGCG, and dietary changes with actual evidence. If you find them comforting, a standard heat pad achieves the same warmth effect with less effort.
