Fight Fibroids With Diet And Supplements

Your menses are here and your bleeding is much heavier than it had been in the past. Aside of the inconvenience of the flow, you are experiencing severe cramps. You make a mental note to check with your gynecologist, but as the days went by you got sidetracked with daily bustle and grind and making an appointment with your doctor slipped by. Six days of so fly by, the menses stop and you forget all about it.

The following month rolls around and the cycle continues, bleeding heavier than the previous month with excruciating cramps and pain. This time you do make an appointment to see your doctor, an ultrasound test is performed. You are told that you have developed fibroids. You panic and want to know if you will have to go under the knife to remove it. Well, take heart, chances are you might be able to control this growing mass in your uterus just by tweaking your diet and taking the right supplements.

Uterine fibroids are benign growths that plague about 50% of women in their childbearing years. They appear as a dense fibrous tissue and are fed by a series of blood vessels. They can grow as big as a grapefruit and the beginning symptoms can run from heavy bleeding to menstrual cramps, to severe debilitating pains.

Other symptoms of fibroids are:

*Prolonged excessive menstrual periods;

*Pelvic pain;

*Abdominal swelling;

*Painful sexual intercourse;

*Urinary urgency;

*Constipation and bloating.

Treating Fibroids Naturally

Fibroids grow as you get older and normally shrink after menopause.However, if your symptoms are severe and causing problems, you will obviously need treatment or have the fibroid removed, but for the most part, most fibroids never get treated because you can live with it and it will most of the time not interfere with your health or pregnancy.

Control estrogen by switching to soy milk. Excess estrogen can trigger fibroid growth but soy contains compounds that can diminish estrogens harmful effects. Aim for at least one cup of soy milk a day. You can also enjoy a handful of soy nuts or cup of edamame.

Pile your plate with mushrooms. Research proves that maitake mushrooms can stimulate the immune system to attack and destroy fibroids and other tumors. Aim for cup of these Asian mushrooms daily.

Boost your vitamin B intake. Stress has been proven as a risk factor of fibroid growth. Take a daily dose of vitamin B-complex to help counter stress.

Eat fish rich in omega-3 to reduce inflammation. Inflammation is associated with fibroids, therefore consuming fatty fish such as salmon, tuna, mackerel and sardines decreases your risk of developing fibroids by as much as 70%.

Take a lycopene supplement. Studies have proven that lycopene, the phytochemical that gives tomatoes and watermelons their red color can reduce the number and size of uterine growths. All you need is half a cup of tomato sauce daily, or one cup of watermelon to keep fibroids in check.

Cut back on drinking alcohol. Alcohol can triple production of estrogen, which in turn can trigger fibroids growth.

Finally, know that there are other options besides hysterectomy for fibroids, so explore all your options. And if you really must have your fibroids removed, you can opt for a non-surgical treatment called Uterine Artery Embolization.Talk to your doctor about this treatment.

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. QUESTION:

    I am 16 weeks pregnant and have a brown slimy discharge. Is this from fibroids?
    I have been having lots of pains around my belly button and on my right side. An ultrasound proved baby to be fine. I also have a UTI. Dr says the pains around my navel are from my stretching uterus. Has anyone else dealt with this?? Will these pains go away?? Any reason for concern about the brown discharge??

    • ANSWER:

      You know you can never go wrong with what your DR says. But always know if you need to go to the emergency room go. It is better to be safe than sorry.

  2. QUESTION:

    I periodically get blood tinged mucus vaginal discharge, what does that mean?
    It happened about 6 months ago. It went on for about a two months. I had the discharge for about a week at a time. It was only noticeable on the toilet paper. I went to the doctor, she ran tests and nothing came out of it, other than I have fibroid’s. Can having fibroids cause this bloody mucus to come and go?..I have no other symptom’s.

    • ANSWER:

      Yes, fibroids can cause that. Some women may also have spotting like that for no reason.

  3. QUESTION:

    Increased clear vaginal discharge good or bad?
    Increased clear vaginal discharge to where the underwear is soaked……is that a sign of pregnancy? I also have every symptom of being pregnant (except i havent taken a test yet). But I also know that I have fibroids and ovarian cysts.

    • ANSWER:

      Some females experience more discharge when they are pregnant, some don’t. I never did. Best to take a test.

      Different Types of Discharge:

      White: Thick, white discharge is common at the beginning and end of your cycle. Normal white discharge is not accompanied by itching. If itching is present, thick white discharge can indicate a yeast infection.

      Clear and stretchy: This is “fertile” mucous and means you are ovulating.

      Clear and watery: This occurs at different times of your cycle and can be particularly heavy after exercising.

      Yellow or Green: May indicate an infection, especially if thick or clumpy like cottage cheese or has a foul odor.

      Spotting Blood/Brown Discharge: May happen right after periods, and is just “cleaning out” your vagina. Old blood looks brown. This may occur when you are ovulating/mid-cycle.

      Different types of infections:

      Signs of yeast infections:
      White, cottage cheese-like discharge
      Swelling and pain around the vulva
      Intense itching
      Buy Monistat 7 over-the-counter

      Signs of bacterial vaginosis:
      A white, gray or yellowish vaginal discharge
      A fishy odor that is strongest after sex or after washing with soap
      Itching or burning
      Slight redness and swelling of the vagina or vulva
      See a doctor

  4. QUESTION:

    anyone here ever had bad uterine fibroids?
    I think I may have developed a uterine fibroid(s). I’m having mucus and bleeding discharge while I’m taking progesterone, and I’ve read they are about the only “female” issue that gets worse with progesterone exposure instead of better. Also, my mom had one of the worst cases they’d ever seen when they were doing an autopsy on her over a year ago, and I’ve read they are genetic. Does anyone want to share how their symptoms presented? I do have a doc appointment on Thursday.

    • ANSWER:

      It does sound like you might have a uterine fibroid. My Mum used to get them all the time and experienced very heavy and painful periods accompanied by pelvic pain and also had heavy bleeding between periods. Before my Mum was diagnosed with her fibroids her doctors thought her pain was caused by her endometriosis (another condition she had).

      I haven’t personally experienced fibroids, but I do believe that some conditions are hereditary as my Mum had suffered from ovarian cysts, fibroids, endometriosis and eventually had a hysterectomy. I too suffer with ovarian cysts regularly and was diagnosed with endometriosis last year.

      I would recommend you follow through with your doctors appointment on Thursday and hopefully they will be able to give you a better indication as to what could be causing your bleeding.

      Good luck 🙂

  5. QUESTION:

    Anyone here with bad uterine fibroids?
    Wondering if anyone wants to share their story of having a uterine fibroid bad enough to warrent surgery. What were your symptoms. Did you have mucus discharge and bleeding?

    • ANSWER:

      For years now, I’ve considered myself the Queen of Uterine Fibroids.

      I’ve had them for over ten years now. And over that time, they have increased in size. The strange thing is that I only feel them during my menstrual cycle.

      In an ultrasound I had five months ago, I was told that there were two very large fibroids. When I was first diagnosed ten years ago, it was just ONE small fibroid the size of my thumb. Now there are two and they are now each the size of a fist.

      They run in my family. My mother has them as well, and happily for her, they shrunk away after she began menopause. I’ve got a few years to go before I can look forward to that “shrinkage.”

      For now, I have no plans to have surgery for them, as they are not debilitating.

      They do cause heavier periods. I had a doctor who had suggested surgery, but I decided against that.

      I hope yours are better.

      Take care and I wish you well.
